Learn from experience

Wow, 2009 is drawing to a close. It's been a great year for me as far as running goes. I've accomplished a lot of things that two years ago I wouldn't have dreamed possible. It pains me that my December running is ending on a sour note.

Today is the ninth day since I last went out and ran. My hamstrings (the right one in particular) have been tender on and off since last November but it hasn't affected me terribly.

Lately, that has started to change. I've been running suicide sprints with my daughter's basketball team trying to motivate them by getting them to "beat the fat old man." Every time I run the sprints, the next day my hamstrings (left and right) are killing me. I'll go easy on them by not running for a couple of days and then I'll try the sprints again. My regular runs are also getting embarrassingly slow because my stride is shortening up to compensate for the pain.

I'm hoping to get a bike trainer later this week so that I can continue to train by doing some bike riding while I give my hamstrings some time to heal. I guess the lesson to be had is: Learn from your past experience. Don't continue to try and do something that you know is going to hurt you and expect a different result.

Thankful for 2009, hopeful for 2010

I got up this morning and ran the Columbus Turkey Trot 5 Mile race. I had a decent pace of 10'39"/mile and finished in (unofficially) in 53'41". Good times and hey, who doesn't like free pie?

I've got a lot to be thankful for this year. First and foremost, the support that my family gave me during all of my training for the marathon. They made a lot of sacrifices so that I could achieve my goal. I'm also thankful that my health held up this year and that I'm still motivated enough to keep running.

Now that 2009 is winding down, it's time to start looking ahead to 2010. In 2009 I had only one which was to run in and finish the Columbus Marathon. That was pretty lofty for only having been running for nine months at the time. Now that I've achieved that goal, I need to start thinking about what I'd like to accomplish in 2010.

They're smaller goals, but I think I'm going to need even more work to achieve them:
  • Finish a 5k in less than 27'30"
  • Finish a 10k in less than 60'
  • Finish a Half-Marathon in less than 02:15'
And a sneak peek of what I'm thinking I might want to do to celebrate my 40th birthday in 2011

Gobble Gobble

Hot on the heels of running the Buckeye Bash 5k race last Saturday, I have signed up for the Columbus Turkey Trot 5 Mile on Thanksgiving Day. I had a decent pace at the Buckeye Bash (10:05/mi), so I'm hoping that will carry over into Thursday.

I'm trying to get back in the habit of running short distances (around 5k) before I go to work in the morning. It's rough getting up at 5:00am but when I do, I feel like I've already gotten something accomplished for the day no matter what else it brings.

Bring on the stuffing!!

Relax

I'm the type of person who needs to have clearly defined goals to work towards so I can have that feeling of accomplishment when I reach them. That's why marathon training was mentally relatively easy for me to get into. Physically it was really demanding, but having a set schedule helped me to stay focused.

Right after "the big run" I decided that I was going to try to start working on getting faster. I set myself up a six week schedule that would gradually increase my distances from 0 miles on marathon week back up to 30+ miles per week.

Well I decided that I was going to try run all of these as fast as I could in a bid to increase my speed. The resulting runs were indeed faster, but also started to cause me more pain. I was really starting to dread lacing up my shoes everyday and got to a point where it just wasn't fun.

This week I've tried to put the focus back on enjoying the run and not trying to out do myself everytime I step out the door. It's been far more enjoyable.

Side note: Here's a great little article with some hamstring strengthening exercises. I'm going to try to work these into my regiment and see if I can ease some of the difficulties that I have with my right hamstring. http://bit.ly/hamstrings1

Strange Things afoot at the Circle K

Something is really odd. The last couple of times that I've run, I feel like I've never run before. Horrible panting, leg pain, shin splints, side stitches....I don't know if I'm doing something wrong or if I'm just having trouble getting back into the swing of things post-marathon. It's very disheartening.

Super fail, excuses, big win

Laela(Angel), Ann(Angel), Sarah(Angel), Christiana(Jaws), and I(db) all went and ran the Dead Celebrity 3 Miler on Halloween. Well going for my PR in the 5k was a super fail. I ended up finishing four minutes slower than last year, but that's okay because I had a fantastic time. Lots of great costumes, pizza, and beer afterwards. We followed up by going to Bob's.

I've got plenty of excuses for my time being slower, but the long and the short of it is that I haven't done any speed training at all in the last six months. Oh well, I'll get it next year.

Now for my big win....as of this evening's run I crossed the 2000 mile threshold since I started running with the Nike+ system. That's a lot of miles in seventeen months.

Three Weeks, Three Races

Wow, I didn't even realize this until this morning, but I'm running three races in three consecutive weeks this month. The Columbus Marathon on October 18 was the first, the Nike Human Race 10k at Ohio State on October 24 was the second, and the Dead Celebrity Run 5k on October 31 is the third.

I was really happy with my time on the Human Race 10k on Friday considering it was my first run since marathon. I finished it in 1:07'32" It rained REALLY hard at first but then it stopped.

I'm excited to run the Dead Celebrity Three Miler on Saturday. It'll be the second year in a row that I've run it. Last year my time was 28:08. I was hoping to get in in 27 minutes or under, so that's what I'm shooting for this year.

Now that the marathon is over and my week (okay maybe not a full week) of rest is completed, I need to get back on a schedule of regular running. I've built a post race training plan that is effectively a reverse taper that starts at twelve miles and then adds around ten miles a week. I skipped the first day (Sunday) run because of the Human Race Friday that I did Friday night. I'll make up those three miles tonight.

I've eaten junk food almost exclusively since crossing the finish line on October 18 and am feeling like the proverbial "Lead Zepplin." It's time to kick it back into gear.

The Secret Playlist Project

My wonderful wife embarked on a secret project to give me for running the Columbus Marathon. She solicited musical suggestions from family and friends via Facebook and email for a playlist for me to listen to during the race. The Ultimate Powersong list! It was an invigorating mix of music from all kinds of different genres. Everyone had a different take on what would be motivating to listen to. I wanted to take a minute to thank everyone who contributed. Without further ado, here is the list in it's entirety with contributors in the left-hand column.

The Race and the Aftermath

I had an absolutely fabulous time running the Columbus Marathon today. The course, the volunteers, the bands, and all of the well wishers made it a very memorable experience.

I got a late start getting out of the house this morning and got down to the race with with only ten minutes to spare. That's okay though because I didn't need a whole bunch of layers to keep warm while waiting in the 32 degrees temperature. It took about 10 minutes to actually cross the starting line after the start of the race. It was absolutely packed with 14,000 runners and walkers, which made the first couple of miles "interesting" to navigate. It was so crowded that it was difficult to go around people (primarily because I had to watch out for people going around me at the same time).

Laela, Miranda, and Indy came out to cheer for me several times on the route. They made some great signs. "Bukkit at Mile 26.2" "Zombies Behind You!" "Hurry up, we want beer and wings" Miranda even ran the last 0.2 miles and crossed the finish line with me.

Thanks to everyone for contributing to the playlist that Laela compiled for the race today. I don't know how she managed to do it, but the songs were arranged in such a way that every time I needed a little pickup or boost I got just what I needed. Some of the choices were quite funny and I had a few times that I laughed so hard that other runners were turning around to look at me.

I couldn't have done it without everyone's support. Thanks to Kristi for logging a ton of training miles with me over the summer and for coming down to cheer me on at the finish line. Last but not least, thanks to Laela and Miranda for putting up with all of the training runs I had to do and for rescheduling just about everything on Sundays around my long runs.

I'm going to take a few days off and then get back to it at the end of the week. (I've already got a 10k scheduled for next weekend)

Final Four

Last night I ran my final four training miles before the big day. It was cold enough that I even contemplated wearing pants instead of shorts, but there's no reason to start doing things differently now. It seemed that there were a lot of people on the Olentangy trail last night that were doing easy runs. Maybe that was just my imagination.

The Columbus Marathon Expo started today at noon The family and I are going to scoot down there tomorrow at lunchtime and have a look around.

Judging by the weather forecast for Sunday morning (32 degrees), I'm going to have to find some throwaway sweats to keep myself warm before the race.

I must stop watching playoff baseball and go to bed (go Phillies, go Angels).

1GB of Music and T Minus 6 Days until the race

This is it, the final six days. I have eleven more miles to run before Sunday. I did ten tonight and they were felt really good even though my nose was running like a faucet due the cold I've contracted. This is day three of the cold and it doesn't seem like it's going to be too bad.

I'm busy getting things prepared for the race. Packet pickup is at the Columbus Convention center on Friday and Saturday. I've made sure my favorite gear is washed and ready, washed all of my fuel belt bottles, stocked up on lip balm and body glide. I'm as ready as I'm going to be.

I've switched to using an iPod shuffle instead of a nano since I'm now using my Nike+ SportBand instead of the SportKit. I used the majority of my Columbus Day holiday putting together the first draft of my playlist for the race. Here's what I've got so far, but I've got to prune it down...a lot. Thanks to everyone who threw in their two cents on Facebook.
